The Pontifical College Josephinum seeks to identify a highly qualified canon lawyer as a faculty member for the Bishop James A. Griffin Chair of Canon Law, established in 2005 in honor of the former Bishop of the Diocese of Columbus.
The Pontifical College Josephinum has prepared men for the Roman Catholic priesthood at the high school, college, and graduate level since 1888. Located on a beautiful campus north of Columbus, the Josephinum includes an undergraduate college, two-year pre-theology certificate and bachelor degree programs, and a theologate offering MDiv and MA degrees, as well as an STB in affiliation with the Pontifical Lateran University.
The College and School of Theology are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the Association of Theological Schools. For many decades the Josephinum, the only Pontifical Seminary in the United States, has offered programs recognized for academic excellence and conformity to standards of priestly formation promulgated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as approved by the Holy See.
The focus for its mission is the formation of Renaissance priests for the Evangelization, who relate well to the complexities of culture on all levels and simultaneously witness to the need for its renewal. The Josephinum strongly affirms its Roman and Pontifical heritage.
Because of multiple Seminary responsibilities requiring an ordained priest, a qualified priest candidate is preferable for the Bishop Griffin Chair or for any canon law teaching position at the Josephinum. However, qualified deacons, religious and laity are also considered viable candidates. The successful candidate should preferably have a JCD, but candidates with a JCL will be considered as necessary. It is highly recommended that the candidate have some teaching experience, though this is not essential. Familiarity with canon law regarding annulments and parish ministry/administration is also desirable.
The successful candidate will be appointed to a full-time position in the Griffin Chair and will be responsible for teaching two (2) basic Canon Law courses plus one (1) elective each semester. Recent electives include: Canon Law of Marriage-Theory and Practice; and Canon Law in Priestly Ministry. The successful candidate is expected to participate on academic committees and perform other duties as requested by the Rector/President. If the successful candidate is a priest, he will be expected to serve as formation advisor and spiritual director for seminarians.
Depending on the credentials and experience of the candidate, appointment to the Bishop Griffin Chair, or to another academic position, may be as assistant, associate or professor. Salary for an appointment is negotiable and commensurate with academic credentials and experience.
