Membership

Membership in the Canon Law Society of America is open to interested persons who wish to collaborate in the promotion of the pastoral ministry of the Church within the context of its legal/canonical structures. Membership of non-Catholic persons is also welcomed.

The Society’s constitution identifies four (4) kinds of membership: Active, Associate, Student, and Honorary.
  1. Active membership is open to those who have earned at least a licentiate degree in canon law; active membership is also open to other practitioners in canon law who demonstrate a broadly based competence in canonical issues and who have fulfilled the stipulated requirements established by the Board of Governors of the Society as enumerated in the By-Laws.
  2. Associate members are any others who wish to associate themselves with the purpose of the Society.
  3. Student membership is open to those enrolled in any school of canon law engaged in studies to obtain a licentiate degree in canon law. Student members enjoy the same prerogatives as associate members in the Society.
  4. Honorary members are those persons, who by reason of outstanding contributions in the filed of canon law or in support of the Society, are proposed for this distinction of honorary membership by the Board of Governors and accepted by a majority vote of the active members at the General Meeting.

Institutions such as libraries and communities of consecrated life or societies of apostolic action desiring an associate membership are invited to sponsor an individual person for active or associate membership. This will provide for regular receipt of Society mailings and other membership benefits.

Membership applications are available from the Office of the Executive Coordinator. Applications can be downloaded (a .pdf file) and returned to the OEC or filled out online. Payment of the initial dues is required with the submission of the application.
