Father John Doerfler, vicar general of the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin, has been recently named Bishop of Marquette, Michigan, by Pope Francis. He succeeds Archbishop Alexander Sample, who became archbishop of Portland in Oregon, in January 2013.

Bishop-elect Doerfler was born November 2, 1964, and was ordained a priest for the Green Bay diocese in 1991. In 1997, he earned his licentiate in canon law from The Catholic University of America. He holds a doctorate in sacred theology from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family, and he has been a member of the Canon Law Society since 1995.
