Pope Francis has named Boston Auxiliary Bishop Robert
Deeley, 67, as bishop of Portland, Maine. He succeeds Bishop Richard J. Malone,
who became bishop of Buffalo in May 2012.
Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Boston on
July 14, 1973, Bishop Deeley was named an auxiliary bishop of Boston in 2012. He has been a member of the Canon Law Society since 1978, serving as president of the Society in 2000. Bishop Deeley earned his licentiate and doctorate in canon law in 1983 and 1986, respectively, from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
