Reverend Monsignor James L. Ruef, Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Columbus, died suddenly on January 12, 2015, at his residence.  Monsignor Ruef was a long time member of the Canon Law Society of America and of the Midwest Canon Law Society, and had served as Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Columbus since 2003.

Prior to studies in theology and canon law, Msgr. Ruef enjoyed a career in theater and performing arts, teaching drama and public speaking. He later practiced civil law, both in private practice and as an assistant attorney general for the State of Ohio.

After ordination to the priesthood in 1978, Msgr. Ruef worked closely with the archdiocesan tribunal in a variety of roles, including Pro-Synodal judge, judge, and co-adjutant judicial vicar. A graduate of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, he went on to serve as part of the Canon Law Committee for the USCCB, and in the 1990s, he was an Adjunct Professor of Canon Law for the Pontifical College Josephinum.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, January 19, 2015 at St. Catherine of Sienna Church, 500 Gould Road, Columbus, OH 43209, with Most Reverend  Frederick F. Campbell as Presider.  Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Msgr. Ruef and for the comfort of his family and diocesan community. May he rest in peace.
