Very Reverend James P. Powers, pastor of the parishes of St. Joseph (Rice Lake), St. John the Evangelist (Birchwood), Our Lady of Lourdes (Dobie), and Holy Trinity (Haugen), as well as Adjutant Judicial Vicar, Vicar General, and Diocesan Administrator, has been appointed the eleventh Bishop of the Diocese of Superior, Wisconsin.
Ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Superior in 1990, Bishop-elect Powers earned his licentiate in canon law in 1998 from Saint Paul University, and soon after became a member of the Canon Law Society of America. In 2014, upon the transfer of Bishop Peter Christensen to the Diocese of Boise, Idaho, and in the interim before the Holy Father's appointment, Bishop-elect Powers was elected by Diocesan Consultors to assume the role of Diocesan Administrator.
Bishop-elect Powers' appointment was announced by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, apostolic nuncio to the United States, on December 15 in Washington, DC. An ordination and installation is planned for Thursday, February 18, 2016.
Please join the Canon Law Society in extending warm congratulations to Bishop-elect Powers and prayers for his new ministry!
