Reverend David Matthew Hynous, O.P., passed into eternal rest on March 24, 2016 in Chicago. An active member of the Canon Law Society of America since 1967, he earned his licentiate and doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

Father Matthew began his novitiate with the Order of Preachers in 1952, professing his first vows in 1953 and taking the name Matthew. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1959. In addition to his service in academia - teaching theology, philosophy, and later canon law - he assumed various pastoral and ecclesial roles, including Secretary for the Apostolic Nunciature from 1979-1981, Vicar Provincial for the Dominicans from 1981-1985, and Procurator General for the Dominican Order in Rome from 1995-1997. Father Matthew worked in the Tribunal and served as Vice-Chancellor for the Archdiocese of Chicago from 1986-1995, and after he returned to the United States in 1997, he continued to work on behalf of the Chicago Metropolitan Tribunal. He was most recently employed by the Diocese of Joliet as a judge.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in River Forest (1530 Jackson Ave, River Forest, IL 60305). The mass will begin at 10:00am and will be preceded by Sung Morning Prayer at 9:00am. A luncheon in the Parish Center will follow the burial at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines, Illinois. Memorial donations may be made to the Dominican Friars Central Province, 1910 S. Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL, 60608.

Please remember Father Matthew, his family, and his community in your prayers. May he rest in peace.
