Sr. Holland's Response to Honorary Membership
Resolution
Good Afternoon and Thank you! It is good to be back in the US and at CLSA!
The American freedom to speak one’s mind in the process of
seeking to resolve questions, is a blessing. Still, in returning to US
society and culture, I have seen again how quickly issues become politicized
and confused by angry rhetoric and misinformation which fan fears and risk
losing sight of truth and the common good.
As canonists we to seek to promote the common good with
clarity and truth in our arguments. The Code
calls upon all of the faithful, in exercising their rights, to “take into
account the common good of the Church, the rights of others, and their own
duties toward others” (c. 223 §1).
At a recent Red Mass, there was a quote from St. Thomas More
on the program cover:
Lord
grant that I may be able in argument, accurate in analysis, strict in study,
candid with clients, and honest with adversaries.
In a similar vein, Benedict XVI reminds us that “to defend
the truth, to articulate it with humility and conviction, and to bear witness
to it in life are…exacting and indispensable forms of charity” (Caritas in Veritate n. 1).
So, let us go forward with integrity, charity and truth!
Thank you!
