Sr. Margaret Mary Modde, OSF, 90, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, MN, died at Assisi Heights on Thursday, December 9, 2010.
Sr. Modde entered the Sisters of Saint Francis in 1938 and made profession of vows in 1941. In 1977, Sr. Modde was one of the first women to receive her JCL and JCD from the Catholic University of America. She served as a Canonical Consultant to religious institutes, presented at many workshops and wrote for canonical publications. Sr. Modde has been an Active member of the Canon Law Society of America since 1975 and was the first woman elected onto the Board of Governors as a Consultor in 1979.
From 1989-2008 Sr. Modde served as a Canonical Consultant in the Health Law Department of McDermott, Will & Emery, in Chicago, IL. It was there that she used her gifts and knowledge in canon law, health care, business administration, research publications and vocation/formation leadership. She assisted in mergers of religious institutes and mergers, sales, leases and reorganization of Catholic hospitals and hospital systems as well as Catholic colleges and universities.
Sr. Modde was the recipient of several honors and awards; among many, in 1972, she received the Pro Ecclesiae et Pontifice Medal from the Vatican in recognition of contributions made to the Church and to the work of women religious.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 11:00am at the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights, Rochester, MN. Friends may call at the Assisi Heights for the Vigil Service at 6:30pm, Monday, December 11 and before the time of the service on Tuesday. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rochester, MN.
