Pope Benedict XVI has appointed
Msgr. Lawrence Persico as the new bishop of Erie, Pennsylvania. The
bishop-elect was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania in 1950 and ordained a priest
for the Diocese of Greensburg on April 30, 1977. He earned a licentiate in
canon law from The Catholic University of America in 1982 and has been a member
of the CLSA since 1983.
Among other roles, bishop-elect
Persico has served the Diocese of Greensburg as chancellor since 1989 and as
vicar general since 2005. In 1998, he was appointed to the Pennsylvania
Catholic Conference and elected its vice president in 2006. He was named a
prelate of honor in 2005 and invested as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of
the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 2010.
