Share |

Two pre-convention workshops are offered this year in conjunction with our annual convention. Workshops begin Sunday, October 15, 2017. An additional registration fee of $325 per person ($275 Early Bird Discount) is required for participation in a workshop. Please select only one workshop.

Workshop 1. Mitus Iudex, Dignitas Connubii, and the Use of Psychological Experts

Deacon Gerald Jorgensen, PhD, JCL; Lee Kneipp, PhD

What, if anything, has changed with the promulgation of Mitus Iudex and the use of psychological experts? The workshop will address canonical and psychological issues as such issues relate to use of psychological experts, with an emphasis on the practical issues.

  • A consideration of the "new" canon 1678, §3, especially in light of the "new" canon 1678, §§1 and 3, and the use of psychological experts.
  • What are we to make of Dignitas connubii and what it states about the use of psychological experts?
  • What about the briefer matrimonial process before the bishop and the use of psychological experts?
  • Who is a psychological expert?
  • What should a psychological expert provide to the judge(s)?
  • A brief overview of personality disorders and matrimonial consent.
  • Practical considerations and examination of recent rotal cases, including review of the questions the rotal turnus asked the expert to address as well as the application of the expert report to the facts of the case.
  • A consideration of important interview techniques in questioning the parties.

Group discussion and questions will be encouraged throughout the workshop.

Workshop 2. Advocacy and the Right of Defense: In Service of Justice and Truth

Rev. Daniel Smilanic, JCD; Rev. Msgr. Frederick Easton, JCL; Rev. Robert J. Geisinger, SJ, JCD

This workshop will explore the role of the advocate, including the preliminary investigation, protecting the rights of the accused and associated topics. The presentations will reflect the perspective and experience of both advocates and of the Promoter of Justice of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. The speakers will form a panel, and after each presentation the panel members will share their comments and experiences. There will be time for questions from participants. This workshop is sponsored by the CLSA Committee on Clergy in order to train new and beginning advocates, but it is also open to all members of the Society who want further development in this area.
