General CLSA FAQs

How can I find a canon lawyer? Although over 1,400 canonists belong to the Society, the Society does not have the capacity to provide advocates for those seeking a canon lawyer. The Office of the Executive Coordinator suggests those seeking canonical advice contact his/her local (Arch)diocese's Tribunal or Canonical Affairs Offices. After contacting those resources, if you still need help locating a canonist, please contact the Office of the Executive Coordinator and we will do our best to provide a helpful canonist.

What is the purpose of the Canon Law Society of America? The purpose of the Society is to promote the pastoral ministry of the Church, to cooperate in the continuous revision and renewal of the universal law of the Church, to encourage and participate canonical research, to respond to the practical canonical needs of all the people of God, to facilitate the interchange of canonical ideas, to cooperate with others doing research in other sacred sciences, and to establish a dialogue with other canon law societies in the world. For more information view the CLSA Constitution.

What are the benefits of becoming a member? Any person interested in the promotion and growth of canon law can become a member of the Society, but only those with a licentiate in canon law can become 'Active' members (students of canon law are 'Student Associate' members, and all others are 'Associate' members). Membership benefits include discounted CLSA publications, subscription to the CLSA quarterly newsletter, Proceedings of the Annual Convention, discounted registration for the CLSA annual convention, online video presentations (coming soon!), online texts, networking with other canonists and access to the Members Only portion of the CLSA website.

What is the cost of being a CLSA member? Currently, the price of membership is $200 for Active & Associate members and $100 for Student Associate members. Any change in the amount of the annual dues is proposed by the Board of Governors but is determined by a majority vote of members present and voting at a General Meeting. The fiscal year of the Society begins on July 1 of each year and ends on June 30 of the following year.

How is the Society structured? The Canon Law Society of America is governed by a Board of Governors, headed by the President of the Society. For more information view the CLSA ConstitutionBy-Laws.

My Profile FAQs

Membership Database Information CLSA members can change any information in their membership profile by logging in and clicking the 'Manage Profile' link located in the right hand 'My Profile' menu. All membership information is private and only available for viewing by other CLSA members. The CLSA does not share this information to any person or organization unless consent is given by the member.

What is the 'My Profile' menu?
When a CLSA member logs in to the website, the 'Member Log In' box changes to 'My Profile' menu. This menu helps members navigate through any and all information that is specifically connected to his/her account.
Here you can edit your Profile, view your 'Groups', create and subscribe to blogs, change your preferences, read and send internal site messages, and view your membership status (whether your dues are up to date or not). Members can choose to use as little or as many features within the CLSA 'online community.'

What is 'Profile Home'?
'Profile Home' is all the information attached to your CLSA membership file.   Unfortunately, not all the data we previously collected was able to convert to our new site, so please check your profile for accuracy and add as much information as you would like. To view a completed membership profile, please search the Membership Directory for Katie Richards.

What is 'Manage Profile'? Members can click on 'Manage Profile' to edit your profile information, set your online preferences, create & manage blogs, view & send messages, access groups, manage your subscriptions, and pay your dues online. Once you click on 'Manage Profile,' a new menu will appear with all these options highlighted. Each of the available options on this menu are explained below.

What are 'Preferences'? 'Preferences' are your personal preferences regarding how often you wish to be alerted by email regarding activity on the CLSA website. We recommend members check the box next to 'Email me when new messages arrive'; this enables you to receive an email notifying you that an internal site message has been sent to you by another CLSA member. These settings can be changed at any time.

What are 'Blogs'? 'Blogs' are your personal blogs which you can choose to create and update as frequently as you wish, or you can choose not to utilize this feature. Other CLSA members can search for, view, comment on and 'Subscribe' to your blog. Non-members cannot access or view your blog. For an example of a blog, view the 2009 Convention Blog.

What is 'Messaging'? By clicking on the 'Messaging' link members can send and read messages to and from other CLSA members. These messages are sent through the CLSA website's internal messaging system. Members can choose to receive an email notification when a message is sent. The 'Message Center' page is set up similar to an email account; each member has an inbox, can read/save/delete messages sent and received. Committees may also send 'Group Messages' to all members of the committee.

How do 'messages' differ from emails? Messages (as found in the 'Message Center') are generally short messages sent through the CLSA website. Unless you have your preferences set to do so, you will not receive an email notification every time you receive a message. In order to retrieve messages, you must log in to the CLSA website. Members can use these messages to contact other members who may not have an email address posted or simply to send a short, quick message to a colleague. Internal messaging systems are used by social networking sites (much like the new CLSA website) to encourage networking and to provide easy communication between members.

What are 'Groups'? 'Groups' is a listing of groups to which you belong. Currently the CLSA has three categories of 'groups': Committees, Vocations and Convention. Please contact us if you would like to change your group membership.

What is my 'Primary Group'? Each member belongs to a 'Vocation' according to the information provided during the application process (i.e. Lay Single Man, Lay Married Man, Permanent Deacon, Lay Single Woman, Lay Married Woman, Religious Sister, Religious Brother, Religious Priest, Transitional Deacon, Secular Priest and Bishop). If your 'Vocation' has changed, please contact us.

What are 'Subscriptions'? 'Subscriptions' is the list of blogs to which you choose to subscribe. You can Search Blogs for a specific CLSA member or by topic, and you may subscribe to as many blogs as you wish. Currently the 'Forum' feature is not activated, and therefore you cannot currently subscribe to any 'Forums'. Members can manage their subscriptions (i.e. determine when you are emailed regarding blog activity and unsubscribe to blogs) at any time.

What is  'Membership'? 'Membership' is the information regarding the status of your dues. The CLSA Fiscal year runs from June 30 to July 1 of each year, and members are given a three month leniency period to pay each year's dues. Therefore, if your dues are up-to-date your information should read: "Your current membership expires 6/30/(next year)." If you have not yet paid this year's dues you should read: "Your current membership expires 6/30/(this year)."

How do I pay for my Annual Dues online? Members who are interested in paying for dues online must use a Visa or MasterCard. You can only pre-pay dues for the following fiscal year 15 days prior to the new fiscal year (i.e. June 16). Click on the 'Membership' link (after logging in) located in the right-hand 'Membership Info' menu link; then click 'Securely renew your membership now'. Follow the instructions provided for online dues payment, you will automatically receive an email to the email address on file as acknowledgment of payment.
